Signed Books

Russian, later French and American composer (1882-1971), widely considered one of the most important of the 20th century. Signed book about him "The Book About Stravinsky", published by Triton, 1929, written by Igor Glebov (1884-1949) - his real name was Boris Asafyev - a composer himself (creator of several operas and ballets, 5 symphonies, and other pieces), writer, music critic and one of the founders of Soviet musicology.  Stravinsky signed on his photo, shown young, on page 3, dating the signature in 1962. Australian dramatic coloratura soprano (1926-2010) noted for her contribution to the renaissance of the Bel Canto repertoire in the late 1950s through the 1980s. Book "Joan Sutherland: A Tribute" by Moffatt Oxenbould, signed and inscribed by the star Australian soprano on the title page, dated in 1989.  Book published by Honeysett Publications, Australia; 1st Edition.  Size is 8.2 x 11.6 inches, 128 pages, dust jacket, in excellent condition.

First English edition of this classic ballet book by Valerien Svetlov, published by C. W. Beaumont, London, 1922. Volume dedicated to a biography of famous dancer Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978), a total of 148 numbered pages plus extras, with many  full-page illustrations, some in color and others in sepia tone. Original hard covers, 8.5 x 12.4 inches, some wear on covers, spotted stains in title pages, in very good condition.

German aero-engineer and test pilot (1898-1993) who worked as director of the Madras Institute of Technology, and played a crucial role in the development of the Indian airforce. Heinz Conradis' book "Forschen und Fliegen: Weg und Werk von Kurt Tank" (Research and Fly: Kurt Tank's Path and Work) signed and inscribed by Kurt Tank on the frontend page in Bangalore, October 28, 1960. The book was written in German, published by Musterschmidt-Verlag, 396 pages, size is 5.5 x 8.25 inches, hardcovers, dustjacket, some wear and cracks on the dustjacket, some rust in the initial pages, the rest in excellent condition. ALSO INCLUDED are four photographs of Mr. Tank and alongside Indian president Jawaharlal Nehru.

British stateswoman (1925-2013) and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom between 1979 and 1990 and first woman to hold that office. Signed book, signature is on the title page. Published by Harper Collins, New York, 1993. Hardcovers, dust jacket, 912 numbered pages, in excellent condition.

U2 is an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976. The group consists of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. Book "U2 by U2" signed by two members of the band: the Edge on his bio page and Clayton on the cover. Published by Harper Collins, first edition (2006). Size is 9.75 x 11.8 inches, 353 pages approx., soft covers, some wear on the corners, otherwise in overall very good condition. IMPORTANT: The four signatures of the members of the band appearing on the opposite page to the first title page are facsimile (printed).

Poetry book edited and compiled by LaVerne Harrell and Mary MacArthur; signed and inscribed by Harrell on the first title page with a long sentiment, dated in 1977.  "The Face of Poetry" includes over 100 poems including their author's photo page, with the signatures of 32 of them: Paul Zimmer, C.K. Williams, Peter Wild, Diane Wakoski, Tomas Tranströmer, Pamela Stewart, William Stafford, Charles Simic, Richard Shelton, Marina Rivera, Steve Orlen, Susan North, John Logan, Philip Levine, Maxine Kumin, Rolly Kent, Donald Justice, Will Inman, among others. Size is 6 x 9 inches, 300 pages, softcovers, some wear on the spine, otherwise in excellent condition.

French journalist (1884-1968), teacher, and historian of the French circus. The first volume of his book "La Merveilleuse Histoire du Cirque" signed and inscribed by him on the first title page with a short sentiment. First edition by Prima (1947), 271 pages with illustrations and photographs, hardcovers, size is 8.5 x 11.1 inches, in very good condition.

English actress (1882-1976) who toured internationally in Shakespearean productions, often appearing with her husband Lewis Casson. Her biography written by her and Elisabeth Sprigge, signed by both on the full title page. First edition by Victor Gollancz, London, 1971. 348 pages, hardcovers, dust jacket. Size is 5.7 x 8.7 inches, book in excellent condition, dust jacket with wear on edges.

American author (1827-1916). His book "The Poetical Works of John Townsend Trowbridge", signed by him and inscribed to his son on the front end page, dated in 1906.  Book published by Houghton, Mifflin & Co, Boston & New York, 1904. Size is 5.5 x 8 inches, 360 pages, hardcovers, no dust jacket, green cloth covers, in very good condition.

American singer (1886-1966), comedian, actress, and radio personality; considered one of the most popular entertainers in the U.S. during the first half of the 20th century. Her autobiography "Some of These Days" signed, inscribed, and dated by her on April 30, 1963, over the opposite to the full title page.  The autobiography was published in 1945 (no apparent editor or publisher mentioned), 309 pages, hardcovers, dust jacket; size is 5.75 x 8 inches, some wear on the dust jacket, book in excellent condition.

American author (1924-2003), celebrated for his historical fiction novels, Uris created many bestselling books, including Exodus and Trinity.  Signed book, published by McGraw-Hill, first edition 1967, Uris signed on the frontend page with a short greeting. Hardcovers, dust jacket, 342 numbered pages, 5.75 x 8.5 inches, in very good condition.

Book by Arnold L. Haskell, published in 1943 by Adam & Charles Black, with multiple signatures of ballet dancers from the company. A total of 10 signatures, all in the frontend page and opposite to the back of the front cover.  Signers are (top to bottom): Ninette de Valois (who wrote a short introduction to this book), Margot Fonteyn, Leslie Edwards, Joy Newton, Margaret Dale, Beryl Grey, Robert Helpmann, Julia Farron, Alexis Rassine and Celia Franca. A total of 96 numbered pages, includes some photographs in black and white, 5.6 x 8.6 inches, dustjacket and hardcovers. The dustjacket is in poor condition, book is in very good condition. 

American writer and intellectual (1925-2012). His historical fiction novel "Julian" signed by him on the first title page. Published by Little, Brown & Co., 1st Edition, 1st Printing.  Size is 6.25 x 9.4 inches, 503 pages, hardcovers, missing dust jacket, in very good condition.

Irish composer (1852-1924), who was also music teacher and conductor, creator of an important number of symphonic music and coral work for church performance, plus 9 operas. Printed score for full orchestra for his 3rd Symphony, signed by the composer in pencil on top of the title page.  Villiers Stanford´s 3rd Symphony was premiered in 1887 and was entitled "The Irish", it is his most popular symphony. Published by Novello, Ewer and Co., London and New York, 183 numbered pages plus extras, hardcovers, 11 x 13.6 inches. Pencil markings by another hand in some pages, (see a scan of page 1 as an example), spotted rust, in overall good condition.

Former manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York (b.1940), where he had a 42-year long career. Signed book, first edition by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2006. Signed and inscribed by Volpe on the title page, 304 numbered pages, hardcovers, dust jacket, book includes some illustrations, all in excellent condition.

Austrian composer of light operettas (1819-1895). Fatinitza was premiered in Vienna in 1876, and was Franz von Suppe´s first full opera and one of his biggest triumphs. Signed piano and vocal score, no year mentioned but circa 1879, listing the singers of the Paris premiere of 1879 - probably printed for the occasion.  Boldly signed by the composer and inscribed to Scipion, one of the singers in the cast that night. Photo book signed by the famous performing arts photographer, with many pictures, 188 pages, published by Doubleday Company, 1971. Signed and inscribed on frontend page by Waldman, dated in another hand in 1976. Size is 7.4 x 10.5 inches, book and dust jacket in very good condition.

American best-selling author and screenwriter (1916-1990), famous for some his novels.  Signed book, published by Signet Books, 1963, softcovers edition, 740 pages, signed and inscribed on the title page, dated by Wallace in 1963. Size is 4.25 x 7.1 inches, in excellent condition.

Signed autobiography of the great german conductor and composer (1874-1962), entitled Theme and Variations - Memories and Thoughts, in German. Full book, with all 528 pages and covers, in very good condition. Edited by Bermann-Fischer Verlag, Stockholm, 1947. Walter boldly signed under his photo on page 5. A wonderful piece of memorabilia for any Bruno Walter fan

English composer (1902-1983) who composed music in several classical genres during his sixty-year career. His biography "Behind the Facade" authored by his daughter Susan Walton, signed by her on the full title page with a long sentiment, dated in New York, 1988.  Size is 6.3 x 9.5 inches, 255 pages plus extra pages including photographs.  Published by Oxford University Press, hard covers, dust jacket, in excellent condition.

English composer (1902-1983), known for his works on several classical genres including opera, oratorio, orchestral, film, etc. Printed vocal score of his cantata "Belshazzar´s Feast" (1931), this is the revised edition from 1955, signed by the composer on the front cover. Size is 6.75 x 9.75 inches, with all 120 pages and both covers, some damage/wear in the spine, markings inside, in overall very good condition.

American artist (1928-1987), film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His book "The POPism: The Warhol 60's" signed by him on the dust jacket and on the front end page; published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York - London, 1980, American Edition (central section with photographs).  Size is 6.5 x 9.4 inches, 310 pages, hardcovers, dust jacket with some wear and cracks, book in excellent condition.

American artist (1928-1987), director and producer, was a leading figure in pop art. Signed (initialized) book "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol - From A to B & Back Again", first edition, 1975, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York and London. A total of 242 pages plus covers, 5.75 x 8.5 inches, dust covers and book in excellent condition.

First president of Israel and zionist leader (1874-1952), Weizmann was also a noted biochemist.  Signed biography book in 2 volumes, only volume 1 is signed on this limited edition in special paper of just 500 copies, each one signed and numbered. Hardcovers in blue cloth, wear and some damage on spines, no dust jacket, otherwise in excellent condition.  

English writer (1866-1946), prolific in many genres such as biography, short story, novel, and history.  Beautiful edition in three volumes of his book "The World of William Clissold: a Novel in a New Angle" signed by the author on the back of the title page of each volume.   Each volume's size is 5.25 x 8 inches, 883 pages in total, published by Ernest Benn, London, 1926; deluxe edition, gilded top edges, luxurious binding, in every good condition.

American political journalist and historian (1915-1986), known for his reporting from China during WWII and his political books. Signed book "Breach of Faith", first edition published by Atheneum Publishers, New York, 1975. A total of 373 numbered pages, hardcovers, dust jacket, signed by White on the first title page, 6.25 x 9.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Romanian-born American writer and human rights activist (1928-2016), a holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1986). Signed book, part of the Easton Press leather-bound signed editions, copy 368 from a total of 700, published in 2012. Signature is on first page, also included is a certificate of authenticity signed by Wiesel and Peter Sydney from Easton Press. Hardcovers, gilded edges, 214 numbered pages, 5.7 x 8.7 inches, in excellent condition.

American educator and author of children stories (1856-1923), most notably the classic "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1903). Signed book, with a short sentiment on the frontend pages, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, 1913, with some color illustrations by H. M. Brett. Hardcovers, 374 pages, 5.1 x 7.75 inches, some age decoloration on covers, otherwise in very fine condition.

American playwright (1911-1983), one of the foremost writers of America during the 20th century. Signed book, a novel published by Bantam Books, 1976, this is a second edition, first edition by Bantam (book was published in 1975 by Simon & Schuster). Softcovers, 214 numbered pages, signed by Williams on the title page, 4.1 x 7 inches, in excellent condition.
